Alexander Dawson Lower School

Alexander Dawson Lower School

Originally founded by Paul Hutton, AIA in 1990, the firm provides complete architectural design and construction administration, including site selection, master planning, programming, interior design, and sustainable design to clients throughout the Rocky Mountain West.

Hutton Architecture Studio is recognized regionally as an innovator in daylighting and sustainable design.  Fundamental to all of the firm’s work is the harvesting of daylight to improve occupant performance and reduce energy costs.  Additionally, the use of recycled and environmentally friendly materials while creating beautiful, low-maintenance environments is paramount to Hutton Architecture Studio.

In 2009, the firm began helping shape Colorado’s energy economy with the Governor’s Energy Office (GEO), implementing the new High Performance Building Program.  Funded in part by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the program provides outreach and assistance to projects across Colorado that are early in the planning and design phases in order to create energy-efficient buildings that are comfortable, lasting, and improve the lives of each occupant.

Although the firm has a broad range of experience, its expertise is in the design of educational facilities, including K-12 public, private, and charter schools.  Hutton Architecture Studio has designed more than 90 school facilities, including the new Aspen Middle School (the first LEED NC Gold public school in Colorado), the energy-efficient prototype elementary school design for Douglas County Schools (as seen on YouTube), and the Joliet Learning Center, a sustainable school that accommodates students with extreme behavioral and emotional needs.  Other notable projects include the new $11 million American Academy; design for the first all-new school building in Colorado funded by the Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) program; additions and renovations at Summit Middle School in Boulder; and a master plan to expand upon 20 years of improvements at the Alexander Dawson School campus in Boulder County.

As a member of Cuningham Group Architecture, Inc., the Denver office of Hutton Architecture Studio remains committed to fostering innovative ideas and continuing sustainable design leadership for clients in the Rocky Mountain West. The two firms merged in July 2012.
